On Oct. 9, 1919, the Cincinnati Reds won the World Series, 5-3, defeating the Chicago White Sox 10-5 at Comiskey Park. (The victory turned hollow amid charges eight of the White Sox had thrown the Series in what became known as the "Black Sox" scandal.)

25 years ago - 1984

Around 30 pets were brought to Sts. Peter and Paul Church where Fr. Robert Brague blessed them in honor of the birthday of St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals.

Graduating from the Williamsport Area Community College were Lisa M. Page of Canton, Ruth C. Pond of Athens, and Lorena I. Route of Roaring Branch.

Towanda fire chief John Brutzman and first assistant chief Walter Cook held fire drills at the Towanda schools. At the high school, with 900 teachers, staff and students, the building was evacuated in 1 minute and 45 seconds.
