On Oct. 22, 1962, President John F. Kennedy delivered a nationally broadcast address in which he publicly revealed the presence of Soviet-built missile bases under construction in Cuba and announced a quarantine of all offensive military equipment being shipped to the Communist island nation. Kennedy also called upon Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev to "eliminate this clandestine, reckless and provocative threat to world peace."

Work on the new Troy sewer plant is progressing as scheduled, according to Orville Hunter, project superintendent. The work on the plant began last April and is expected to be in operation by February.
A low bid from Gra-Hill Construction, Wellsboro, was accepted by the Bradford County Commissioners for the demolition of the manor barns.
A proposed budget of about $644,000 was accepted for public advertisement by the Troy Borough Council at their recent meeting. According to John Parsell, borough manager, there will be no tax increase for borough residents.
50 years ago - 1962
Members of the Towanda Lions Club yesterday collected 28,000 pounds of paper with the proceeds going to the Eyesight Fund. This is one of the largest paper drives the Lions have had in some time.
Athens High's Bulldogs annexed the Roosevelt Trial League Championship recently by turning back the Wyalusing Valley High Rams 26-6 in football action.
Sayre High's Redskins clinched second place in the Roosevelt Trail League recently by clobbering the Troy High team 45-14.
75 years ago - 1937
Extension of eight stalls of the present Lehigh Valley roundhouse at a cost of about $50,000 will start next week with Henry Street Corp of Elmira as the contractor.
The Bradford County Commissioners yesterday set the travel fee of Sheriff N.E. Benson at 7.5 cents per mile.
At the annual meeting of the Masonic Hall Association held recently, officers were re-elected as follows: president, Albert M. Baker; secretary, Seeley T. Remsnyder; treasurer, William A. Sullivan; trustees, George B. Winter and William M. Rosenfield.
