25 years ago - 1984

William Weiss of Waverly, Carla Cohen of Waverly, and Barry Aaronson of Towanda were awarded for their service and contribution to the Penn-York Jewish Community.

More than 160 people attended Camptown Elementary School's community Halloween party.

Joining the staff of Guthrie Medical Center in Sayre is Welby Winstead, M.D., who is an associate in Otolaryngology.

50 years ago - 1959

All stores have been requested to close on Wednesday, Nov. 11, as that day is now a legal holiday known as Veterans Day.

The 15-unit motel and tourist home belonging to Mr. and Mrs. James P. McCarthy of North Towanda has been sold to Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Hallett of Huntingdon Valley, Pa., who will continue the operation of the motel.

A law prohibiting billiard rooms, bowling saloons, and ten-pin alleys within two miles of Mansfield State Teachers College has been repealed.

75 years ago - 1934

Well-known Canton attorney C. Arthur Ballock was elected the Bradford County Red Cross chairman.

The Bigsbee Sisters, a singing group from Whitney, N.Y., in great demand, will be performing at the North Towanda Methodist Church.

Mr. and Mrs. Llewellyn Smith and their family moved to Homer, N.Y., so that Mr. Smith can work in the creamery.

In 1871, journalist-explorer Henry M. Stanley found Scottish missionary David Livingstone, who had not been heard from for years, near Lake Tanganyika in central Africa.

In 1917, 41 suffragists were arrested for picketing in front of the White House.

Ten years ago: President Bill Clinton decided to delay and shorten a trip to Greece in reaction to growing security concerns and the prospect of violent anti-American demonstrations.

Five years ago: Word reached the United States of the death of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat at age 75. (Because of the time difference, it was the early hours of Nov. 11 in Paris, where Arafat died.)

One year ago: President George W. Bush and his wife, Laura, welcomed Barack and Michelle Obama to the White House for a nearly two-hour visit; the president and president-elect conferred in the Oval Office, while the current and future first ladies talked in the White House residence.
