25 years ago - 1984

Due to the planned construction of a new Susquehanna River bridge in Towanda, Wayne Fleming's barbershop was "rolled" to a new location 100 feet from its original location.

Towanda native Keith Stevens was named assistant to the dean for development and alumni relations in the College of Agriculture at Penn State.

Almost $500 was raised in the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital Bike-A-Thon in New Albany.

50 years ago - 1959

David M. Turner, president of The Towanda Printing Co. and co-publisher of The Daily Review, presented citations for long service to veteran employees: T.J. Finn, vice president and co-publisher, with 45 years; Lynn Ashton Merrill Jr., city and sports editor, with 35 years; James Vincent, make-up man, with 30 years.

Dyson P. Shultz, son of Mr. and Mrs. H.D. Shultz of Towanda and a junior majoring in English at Mansfield State Teachers College, was elected to honor fraternities Kappa Delta Pi and Phi Sigma Pi.

At a cheerleading demonstration at Sullivan Highland School, four girls - Donna Phillips, Susan Lee, Marilyn Houseknecht and Toni Zerner - were chosen to join the four other girls on the cheerleading squad.

75 years ago - 1934

Well-known Towanda resident James Burron was elected president of the student body of the Sayre-Towanda Undergraduate Extension Center of Penn State.

In the Bradford County Rural Dramatics Program, Spring Hill Grange took first with its presentation of "Faith and Works."

Edna M. Dimock, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F.L. Dimock of Wyalusing, was elected as a flautist to the Women's Symphony Orchestra of the Penn State College.

Ten years ago: Officials close to the investigation into the crash of EgyptAir Flight 990 said a relief co-pilot alone in the cockpit had said in Arabic: "I made my decision now; I put my faith in God's hands" just before the jetliner began its fatal plunge. (In Egypt, relatives angrily rejected any notion that relief co-pilot Gameel el-Batouty had deliberately crashed the plane.)

Five years ago: It was announced that Kmart was acquiring Sears in a surprise $11 billion deal.

One year ago: In their first meeting since the election, Barack Obama and former rival John McCain met at the president-elect's transition headquarters in Chicago, where they pledged to work together on ways to change Washington's "bad habits."
