Today's Highlight in History:

On Nov. 6, 1934, Nebraska voters approved a constitutional amendment which dissolved their two-chamber legislature in favor of a nonpartisan, single legislative body (or "unicameral"), which was implemented in 1937.

Glancing Backward Locally:

25 years ago - 1984

The North Central Pa. Historical Association's Distinguished Historian Award went to Towanda resident Andrew S. Johnson, who is a social studies teacher at Northeast Bradford and was president of the county historical society for 18 years.

Lyle A. Halflett was elected chairman of the Troy Community Hospital board.

Kristina, 9, and Kimberly Johnson, 8, of Powell are celebrating their birthdays today. The Monroe Franklin School students are the daughters of Donna Johnson of Powell and Terry Johnson of Tobyhanna, Pa.

50 years ago - 1959

Ralph Carls, son of Mr. and Mrs. Russel Carls of Wysox, and a senior in the secondary department at Mansfield State Teachers College, was elected president of Kappa Delta Pi.

William G. Ott, professor in law at the Goldey Beacom School of Business in Wilmington, Del., brought The Daily Review a $1 bill issued from the Towanda Bank. The bank was established in 1834 in the basement of the Thomas Elliott house, where Lafy's Grill is located. The bank went out of business in 1843.

The Minnequa Grange won a $50 bond for their community service project - the restoration of the Minnequa Spring and its park.

75 years ago - 1934

As the new Towanda Borough Municipal Building is not yet completed, the borough council held its meeting in the Grand Jury Room of the courthouse.

The fifth grade class of Towanda Second Ward held a spelling contest. The winner was Marjorie McVaugh.

As the South Waverly town hall was torn down last spring, the new polling place was set at 399 Fulton Street in premises owned by Arthur Bingham.

Granville woman hopes vent solves methane dilemma

GRANVILLE TWP. - Shana Spencer of Granville Township has vented her frustration over methane in her well water. Now, she's hoping to vent the troublesome gas itself. Spencer, who lives on High Bridge Road 2,400 feet from Talisman Energy's "Foust" gas wel
