25 years ago - 1984

Two fourth grade classes from J. Andrew Morrow Elementary School sand Christmas carols in front of the Bradford County Courthouse.

The winners of the Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce "Trail of Holly" holiday decorating contest were: fantasy category, Mrs. Robert DeLill of Waverly; modern category, Charlie Jayne of Sayre; religious category, Mrs. Lois Steadler of Sayre; old fashioned category, Mrs. Pat Ayers of Waverly.

50 years ago - 1959

At the Towanda Valley High School Kandie Kane Ball, Beverly Watkins was crowned Kandie Kane Queen.

Also at Towanda Valley High School, William Hay's 10th grade industrial arts class is working on a project which involves furniture repair. The boys brought old pieces of furniture from their homes for repair.

At their December meeting, the Canton Lions Club heard a talk on his native country given by Azher Ansari of Hyderabad, India.

75 years ago - 1934

Albert M. Baker, well-known Towanda business man, was informed that he has been re-appointed to the station of the Grand Master of the First Veil of the Grand Holy Royal Arch Chapter of Pennsylvania.

The boys and girls of the Third Ward School have sold a total of $42 worth of Christmas seals.

The Harrington Ice Cream Company of Dushore has put on the market something entirely new for this Christmas season: and ice cream cake.

Ten years ago: Amid heightened concerns about the possibility of a holiday terrorist attack, security was ordered tightened at American airports and the Pentagon said it was taking "appropriate action" to protect U.S. forces overseas.

Five years ago: A suicide bombing at a mess hall tent near Mosul, Iraq, killed 22 people, including 14 U.S. service members and three American contractors. Two French reporters held hostage for four months in Iraq were released. The Associated Press told the Bowl Championship Series to stop using its college football poll to determine which teams would play for the national title and in the most prestigious bowl games.

One year ago: A multi-faith ceremony was held to mark the reopening of the Oberoi hotel in Mumbai, India, three weeks after it was targeted in a militant rampage. Detroit became the first 0-15 team when it was routed 42-7 by the New Orleans Saints. Playwright Dale Wasserman, who'd written the book for the Tony-winning musical "Man of La Mancha," died in Paradise Valley, Ariz., at age 94.
