Mrs. Mabel Shores of Towanda is celebrating her 89th birthday today.
Two long-time employees of the state Department of Public Assistance, Bradford County office, were recently honored through presentation of service certificates. Dorothy Bennett was recognized for 25 years of service and Connie Gerrity was honored for 20 years of service.
50 years ago - 1962
A fresh supply of the new Christmas postage stamps was received at the Towanda post office yesterday, according to Postmaster Richard E. Snell. Currently the hottest seller in the holiday mart, these stamps are selling so fast that the Washington powers are working the Bureau of Printing and Engraving overtime to keep up with the demand.
Constance Fries of Towanda has been selected by the Tulane University Air Force Reserve Officers Training Corps cadet staff to serve as a sponsor for the 1962-63 school year.
Members of the Sullivan Highland School fifth grade are putting out a four-page monthly paper called "The Fifth Grader." Editor-in-chief is Robert Hydock.

After hunting ever since his early manhood, Alonzo Decker of Vaughan Hill, who is 73, got his first deer a few days ago.
At the Towanda Public School kindergarten class, Mrs. Hydon gave a turtle to the class. It has been missing for about a day from its bowl, and searching parties have been hunting for it in the school.
The Towanda Auxiliary of the Robert Packer Hospital will collect canned fruits and vegetables this week. Those who wish to give and have no way to make deliveries may call 130 or 383 and a car will be sent for them.
