On Dec. 7, 1941, Imperial Japanese warplanes attacked the U.S. Navy base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, as well as other American and British bases in the Pacific; the pre-emptive raids prompted the United States to enter World War II.

25 years ago - 1984

Downtown shoppers have been given free parking for the holiday season by the Towanda Borough Council, acting on a request by the Retail Merchants Association.

The first place winners of the Friends of the Bradford County Library are: fourth grade, Eddie Zelezen of St. Agnes School; fifth grade, William Allen of Audriella Lynch; sixth grade, Sarah Husted of Troy Middle School; seventh grade, Star Wizelman of Towanda Middle School.

After an election of officers, Beverly Mott was named president of the Sayre Fire Department Ambulance Corp.

50 years ago - 1959

Two-thousand children, the biggest crowd ever, went to the Lehigh Valley Washington Street Station to meet Santa.

All the senior homemaking girls at Towanda High School were given the Betty Crocker test, designed to pique girls' interest in homemaking and to inform them about problems that can occur as homemakers.

Celebrating his birthday today is H. Austin Snyder, superintendent of the Sayre Area Joint School System.

75 years ago - 1934

Thousands of people visited the new Robert Packer Hospital unit.

The Warren Center Creamery, which was owned and operated by Crowley Milk Company, has closed.
