On Feb. 16, 1968, the nation's first 911 emergency telephone system was inaugurated in Haleyville, Ala., as the speaker of the Alabama House, Rankin Fite, placed a call from the mayor's office in City Hall to a red telephone at the police station that was answered by U.S. Rep. Tom Bevill.

25 years ago - 1988
Sayre School Board approved a policy revision which will allow the seniors to take an overnight trip to Washington, D.C., at its regular meeting yesterday.
The Wyalusing School Board authorized the administration to establish specifications and received bids for the replacement of stadium bleachers and for the expansion of the administrative office.
Area post offices affected by a federal cost-cutting order included those in Sayre, Athens, Towanda and Troy. Each will be adjusting retail operating hours as part of a nation-wide effort to reduce operating costs.
50 years ago - 1963
Celebrating her birthday today is Mrs. Harry Mosher of Waverly, known to her friends as Snookie.
The Bradford County Beekeepers Association held its annual dinner meeting and elected recently. Norman Cook of Sayre was elected president.
The annual reorganization meeting of the Tuscarora Mutual Insurance Company's board of directors was held recently. R.L. Culver of Laceyville was elected president of the company for a term of one year.
75 years ago - 1938
Following remodeling operations, including the installation of a new modern front in their store, Harden Brothers, local electrical dealers, have announced that their annual spring opening and display will take place this weekend.
Announcement has been received that Frank Montgomery Jr. of Towanda High School has been chosen by the National School Band Association as a member of the National High School Band.
Residents of Leona did not appreciate the ringing of the church bell last Saturday evening. Whether it was done for a false fire alarm, or just for mischief, is not known, but all trust that it will not happen again.

Five years ago: President George W. Bush, on a six-day tour of Africa, made his first stop in Benin (beh-NEEN') before flying on to Tanzania. John McCain, the presumed Republican presidential nominee, picked up a total of 50 GOP national convention delegates from Michigan and Louisiana. A car plowed into a group of street-racing fans obscured by a cloud of tire smoke on an isolated Maryland highway, killing eight people in the early morning darkness.
One year ago: A federal judge in Detroit ordered life in prison for Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab (OO'-mahr fah-ROOK' ahb-DOOL'-moo-TAH'-lahb), a young Nigerian man who'd tried to blow up a packed Northwest jetliner with a bomb concealed in his underwear. New York Times correspondent Anthony Shadid, a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, died of an apparent asthma attack in Syria while reporting on the uprising against its president; he was 43. Hall of Fame catcher Gary Carter died in West Palm Beach, Fla., at age 57.
