25 years ago - 1987

Due to there not being enough ice, the Eagles Mere Toboggan Slide will not be built this year.

Citizens and Northern Bank yesterday donated money for the new scoreboard at Towanda's Veterans Memorial Park.

Coming through the loser's bracket with three straight wins, the Athens squad captured the St. Agnes Junior High Tournament finals, beating St. Paul's of Binghamton twice over the weekend as the tournament, which had a record 17 teams, concluded.

75 years ago - 1937

F.P. Case and Sons of Troy have purchased the G.M. Coons Lumber Co. business on Troy Street in Canton and took possession Feb. 1.

Superintendent W. Milton Roy has recovered from his attack of typhoid fever sufficiently to be able to resume his duties in the Towanda schools.

Glenn O. Cornelius, field representative for the Calkin-Kelly Directory Company of Binghamton, N.Y., who will publish the new city directory, is in Towanda with a force of helpers engaged in collecting data for a new book.

Five years ago: The Indianapolis Colts won Super Bowl XLI (41), beating the Chicago Bears 29-17. Singer-actress Barbara McNair died in Los Angeles at age 72.

One year ago: President Barack Obama appealed to Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to focus on his legacy and begin an orderly process to relinquish the power he'd held for 30 years; however, Obama stopped short of calling for Mubarak's immediate resignation. Iraq's prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki, said he would return half of his annual salary to the public treasury in a symbolic gesture that appeared calculated to insulate him against anti-government unrest spreading across the Middle East.
