At the Sayre Borough Council meeting last night, the council approved a motion to submit the name of police Sgt. Robert Reed to the Civil Service as their recommendation for police chief.
A new policy adopted last night by the Towanda Area School District Board of Education states that "No teacher, administrator, officer, employee or agent of the school district shall use corporal punishment against a pupil."
The Towanda Area School Board at its meeting yesterday voted to send congratulatory letters to the winning members of the local district's Scholarship Challenge team. They are Fred Fulda, Chara Booker, Jill Gorman and Benjamin Fan.
50 years ago - 1963
Sullivan County will benefit greatly from two new industries coming to the area, David R. Smith Jr. of Pennsylvania Electric Co., Towanda, told the Sullivan County Chamber of Commerce recently. He referred to the Masonite Corp., soon to build a plant across the river from Towanda, and to Procter and Gamble Co., which plans a factory at Mehoopany.
Karen Greenough has been named 1963 American Homemaker of Tomorrow candidate from Troy High School.
The ruins of the Sayre Motor Co. at 206 S. Keystone Ave., Sayre, were searched recently by Sgt. Michael Ryan, fire marshal of the Pennsylvania State Police from the Wyoming Barracks, without disclosing information concerning the cause of its recent $100,000 fire.

Two Bradford County teams, Sayre and Canton, competed in District 4 PIAA basketball games last night, Sayre losing to Coal Township at Williamsport 30-26 and Canton defeating Hughesville 42-24.
