Waverly's Progressive Party has swept the Village elections, winning all three of the open seats on the board of trustees in yesterday's voting. Overall winner of the election with 626 votes is Patrick Ayres, followed closely by his ticket running mates, Margaret Aronstam and Mary Robbins.
Retired football star Lydell Mitchell paid a visit to Towanda High School yesterday to address the student body and staff with a message of encouragement for these youths to resist peer pressure and dare to say no to alcohol and drugs.

The Sullivan County Board of Assistance met recently. Members of the board spent some time in the discussion of the use of automobiles by people receiving assistance, and it was their unanimous decision that the law governing their use shall be strictly enforced in the future.
One year ago: A jury in New Brunswick, N.J., convicted former Rutgers University student Dharun Ravi (dah-ROON' RAH'-vee) in the webcam spying episode that ended in the suicide of his gay roommate, Tyler Clementi. (Ravi served less than a month in jail for invasion of privacy, bias intimidation and other counts; he's appealing his conviction.) Actor George Clooney and his father, Nick Clooney, were arrested during a protest outside the Sudanese Embassy in Washington.
