Douglas Skinner, 15, son of Mr. and Mrs. Osmun Skinner of Troy, made a 50-mile hike yesterday and did two extra miles for good measure, just to prove that Trojans can do anything anybody else can do, and better.

In an economy move, the Towanda Area Joint School Board last night abolished the position of art teacher in the elementary grades of the Towanda area schools, at an estimated savings of $5,000 per year.

The directors of the Towanda Rotary Club in a special session yesterday elected Newman Benson of Towanda as president for the coming year.

75 years ago - 1938

Meeting last night, the Chamber of Commerce committee for the "Clean Up, Paint Up, Dress Up" week discussed plans. The idea is to clean up premises both outside and in, not only making them look better, but also eliminating fire hazards.

Seen about the borough: Towandians working up an appetite to patronize each of the three bake sales to be held today and trying to decide whether to buy North Towanda pies, American Legion doughnuts or North Orwell cakes.

A meeting was held in the Sullivan County courthouse recently for the purpose of discussing the advisability of merging the several schools in the townships of Davidson, Laporte and Shrewsbury and the boroughs of Laporte and Eagles Mere.
