On March 7, 1850, in a three-hour speech to the U.S. Senate, Daniel Webster of Massachusetts endorsed the Compromise of 1850 as a means of preserving the Union. (Critics bitterly denounced Webster for endorsing a compromise which included a provision for returning runaway slaves to their owners.)

Williams J. Brutzman, who has donated many hours of service to Bradford County as fire radio coordinator, was publicly thanked by the commissioners for the work he has performed since he assumed the post in 1977.
Daily Review Vice President and Managing Editor Dennis P. Irvine received the Social Security Regional Commissioners Certificate of Appreciation for The Daily Review from Michael R. Boslego, manager of the Towanda Social Security office.
A surprise party was held for Howard Smith Jr. to honor him for 16 years of service on the Bradford County Library Board.
50 years ago - 1960
At Towanda Valley High School, Miss Ross of Penelec visited the 7-C homemaking class and gave a talk on the importance of breakfast. She prepared some tempting breakfast foods such as French omelet, cinnamon apple toast, French toast, and butterscotch and pecan toast.
A 4H Dairy Calf Club will be organized this week at the home of Russell Jones of Warren Center. Any boy or girl is invited to come to this first meeting.
Mrs. Gordon Secor recently entertained at a surprise birthday party in Rome for her son, Ricky, who was 8 years old. Those attending were Danny Webb, Wayne Brown, Jimmy Moore, Beverly Hayward, Nina Sue Abell and Roxy Arnold.
75 years ago - 1935
Owen Hill of LeRaysville has sold his farm in South Warren to a Mr. Leon of Sheshequin who is expected to take possession soon.
At Towanda High School, probably the most active club is the recently organized radio club, which works constantly in the development and improvement of its equipment. A slate switchboard has been installed to facilitate the operation of the radios and supplementary sets.
Sayre Board of Education voted to raise the standard of teacher beginning Sept. 1, 1935, by requiring all teachers to have four-year college training and a degree.
