On March 8, 1862, during the Civil War, the ironclad CSS Virginia (formerly USS Merrimack) rammed and sank the USS Cumberland and heavily damaged the USS Congress, both frigates, off Newport News, Va.

25 years ago - 1985

With a present active membership of 1,194, the Skiff-Bower Post 1536 VFW of Sayre ranks about 14th in the state and about 40th in the nation in membership.

The Towanda Public Library is holding a quarter-a-pound used book sale to raise funds for new children's books for the library.

Celebrating her birthday today is Mary McPherson, pump attendant of McPherson's garage in Rome.

50 years ago - 1960

A $500,000 facilities expansion program for the production and processing of single crystal germanium and silicon for use by the semiconductor industry was announced by the Chemical and Metallurgical Division of Sylvania Electric Products Inc.

Judges for the speaking contest to be held at the Mulberry Street School are David M. Turner, Mrs. Vernon Smith and Mrs. George Dayton Jr.

Carlyle J. Wood has joined the sales force of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. in the Towanda area.

75 years ago - 1935

In his office in the municipal building, Chief of Police A.P. Watson has arranged an interesting display of the photographs of all of Towanda's police chiefs from the first one to the present.

After the Bradford County Volunteer Firemen's Association meeting held at the headquarters of Oscalua-Engine Co., a pancake supper was served, at which one fireman from Towanda ate 17 pancakes.

The Robert Packer Hospital reached an all-time record in the number of patients being cared for there, the number being 261.
