On March 9, 1862, during the Civil War, the ironclads USS Monitor and CSS Virginia (formerly USS Merrimac) clashed for five hours to a draw at Hampton Roads, Va.

25 years ago - 1985

Bradford County ranked third highest in antlered deer killed in the state last year with 4,541 killed.

Third grade students of Mrs. Lee Ann Wolfe and Mrs. Jan Foster at the J. Andrew Morrow School netted $559.50 from a recent candy sale, the proceeds of which will be sent to the Statue of Liberty restoration fund.

Students of Dale Stewart's fourth grade class at Monroe-Franklin School made lap quilts for patients of the Skilled Nursing Unit of Memorial Hospital.

50 years ago - 1960

Albert J. Yonick, former manager of the Al Wasley Jewelry Store located at 427 Main Street, Towanda, announced that he's purchased the store and will operate it under the name of Al Yonick Jewelry Store.

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Kitchin have purchased the former Arthur Nickeson and Walter Nickeson farms at Hornbrook.

G. Billy Johnston was elected president of the New Albany Fire Company at its last regular meeting. James Spencer was elected vice president.

75 years ago - 1935

O.M. Ayers and son, Mark, of Canton have purchased from Harold Wright the property near East Canton known as the Horton farm. Mark will move here from Gillette and occupy the place.

"Skipper" Baker, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Baker of South Main Street, is 3 today.

Morris and Russell Cook and Willard Manchester of Potterville, Fenton Jones of Warren Center, Percy Backus and Leonard Barnes played basketball at Johnson City recently.
