A new, centrally located fire station and a community center for North Towanda Township are a step closer to becoming reality thanks to the news announced yesterday that a Farmers Home Administration loan for this project has been approved.

Although final figures are still dependent on the status of the financial market when the project is finalized, tentative figures show that the estimated $5.4 million Valley secondary sewer project will require a $6.935 million bond issue, as presented last night during a special Athens-Sayre Joint Sewer Authority meeting.
75 years ago - 1937
Union Lodge No. 108 Free and Accepted Mason celebrated the 130th anniversary of its founding last evening in the Masonic Temple at the corner of Main and Pine streets in Towanda.
The vocational home economics girls at the Towanda school will hold a bake sale this weekend at C.H. Maryott's furniture store. This sale is under the direction of Miss Katherine Howd and Miss Pauline Billings.
Announcement was made yesterday that Thomas P. O'Farrell of Sayre will be associated with James J. Hennessey in closing out the stock of the Louis Sattler men's clothing store in Towanda. The huge stock of the Sattler store is to be sold in its entirety, the sale now going on.

(Both were acquitted at criminal trial; Blake was later found liable in a civil trial.) Linda Boreman, formerly known as porn star Linda Lovelace, died in Denver of injuries from a car crash; she was 53.
