On April 27, 2011, powerful tornadoes raked the South and Midwest. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, more than 120 twisters resulted in 316 deaths across parts of Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia.

The Towanda United Methodist Church's youth group held a balloon launch yesterday in honor of the church's Heritage Days.
Game Protector William Bower began a new tree planting program recently in conjunction with Arbor Day. The program is designed to make school children and others aware of the importance of trees as resources and oxygen producers.
About 18 riders were on hand for the annual St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital bike-a-thon yesterday at the Wyalusing Borough Park. Riders raised between $600-700 for the hospital.
50 years ago - 1962
Last night at the Region 6 Lions' Rally held at Troy High School with Troy Lions Club as host club, Beverly Jane Mott was presented two U.S. Savings Bonds in the amount of $25 for winner of the Bradford County NEPH Essay Contest and a $50 U.S. Savings Bond for winning fifth place in the state-wide contest.
Celebrating his birthday today is Garlyle Spencer, manager of Gillette's Drug Store in Towanda.
Earlyn "Bill" Gamble assumed duties as president of the Wyalusing Rainbow Club at the regular meeting recently at the Hollenback Methodist Church.

School closed in Springfield April 19 for the term. Six of the pupils went to Troy last week for the eighth grade examinations.
The quarters in the Carroll block at 507 Main St., Towanda are being remodeled and redecorated for use as a highly modernized fruit and vegetable store.
Miss Gertrude Barnes of Towanda, supervisor of music in the Rome schools, was guest soloist yesterday for a musical program presented by the Spring Circle in the Presbyterian Church in Waverly. She won high praise, her beautiful soprano voice being greatly appreciated.
