25 years ago - 1988
Digging has begun for the courthouse renovation project. The excavation now under way is for the elevator and stair tower to be constructed at the rear of the historic county building.
At the last commissioners' meeting, the last of which Klas Anderson was attending as the county's chief assessor, the board members extended their appreciation to Anderson for a job well done and wished him well in his future endeavors.
The original bandstand in Howard Elmer Park was completed in 1886, repainted in 1931 and rebuilt in 1987. Rededication ceremonies tomorrow will mark the official completion of last year's $20,000 renovation program.
50 years ago - 1963
A special added feature of the coming Spring Festival of Bargains sales event in Towanda will be free parking throughout all the metered areas in Towanda on May 2.
PTA councils and local unit representatives from Bradford, Lackawanna, Monroe, Pike, Sullivan, Susquehanna, Wayne and Wyoming counties will meet in May to form a new district organization of the Pennsylvania Congress of Parents and Teachers.
Celebrating his birthday today is John E. Finlan, manager of the Finlan Insurance Agency in Towanda.
75 years ago - 1938
William Shaw, Roosevelt Highway director for the Chamber of Commerce, said he received definite word yesterday that the State Highway has made its plans for the highway between Towanda and Wysox to be built this summer.
Towanda Country Club will be officially opened tomorrow. This opening comes just one week earlier than last year due to the splendid condition of the greens and fairways.
The Wyoming Production Credit Association will have a representative in the National Farm Loan office, Towanda, every Tuesday morning to serve the credit needs of Bradford County farmers.
