On May 4, 1942, the Battle of the Coral Sea, the first naval clash fought entirely with carrier aircraft, began in the Pacific during World War II. (The outcome was considered a tactical victory for Imperial Japan, but ultimately a strategic one for the Allies.)

25 years ago - 1987

The LeRaysville Loyalty Day Parade was held over the weekend. Trophies for the most patriotic units went to: LeRaysville Fire Department for its decorated truck; Northeast Bradford School for its band; Christy Williams for "Poppy Queen mini float"; and Jamie Carter for her decorated bicycle.

Recently the 10th annual Driver Safety Rodeo was held in Towanda. Scott Bacon was the overall champion scoring 117 out of 125.

Over the weekend at St. Francis of Assisi Hall in Mildred, about 100 people attended the Sullivan County Democratic Dinner.

50 years ago - 1962

The possibility that the abortive boycott of the Towanda Valley High School cafeteria was Communist-inspired and backed was thoroughly discussed at the regular meeting of the Sons of Rest yesterday.

Clean-up week will be observed in Towanda Borough next week. Borough workmen will cooperate with householders in making the community more attractive for the coming summer.

Entries in the sewing contest were judged at the meeting of the Laurel Hill Grange recently. In Class A, first place was won by Jean Corneby. Mrs. James Newell's entry won in Class C.

On petition of a large number of businessmen, Towanda Borough Council last night voted unanimously to extend the parking time on Main Street from a half hour to an hour, starting immediately.

Carl L'Amereaux of Towanda has been named manager of the new office and showroom of the Northern Pennsylvania Power Co. in Troy.

Sayre remains the only town in the Valley to have Daylight Saving Time this year. The Waverly Village Trustees tonight at their regular meeting voted down the Daylight Saving Time proposition and the Athens Borough Council did likewise.
