On June 1, 1813, the mortally wounded commander of the USS Chesapeake, Capt. James Lawrence, gave the order, "Don't give up the ship" during a losing battle with the British frigate HMS Shannon in the War of 1812.

25 years ago - 1988
A reward was offered by an anonymous donor for information that would lead to the apprehension of those responsible for vandalizing the new scoreboard at the Veterans Memorial Park football field in Towanda. Vandals threw rocks at the sign, donated by Citizens and Northern bank, breaking several lights and causing some cosmetic damage.
The Odd Couple (female version) by Neil Simon will be presented by the Winding River Players on June 3 and June 4 at the Towanda Area Middle School. Curtain time is 8 p.m. All invited to this benefit performance for the Bradford County Arts Council (restoration of the Keystone Theatre.)
Brian Elliot, son of Larry and Elaine Elliott of 203 Thomas St.., Towanda, is 12 years old today.

Rebekahs of Bradford County will honor Mrs. Bessie Stone, treasurer of the Rebekah Association of Pennsylvania, at a reception in the Springfield school tonight at 8 o'clock. All Rebekahs of the county are invited to attend.
Paul Meubus of 11 Cherry St., Towanda, an engineering student at Laval University, Quebec, has won a Society Industry (Canadian Sectional Men) Award.
A God and Country Scouting Award will be presented on Sunday to Robert Bennett Jr., son of Attorney and Mrs. Robert L. Bennett of York Avenue, at the First Presbyterian Church.
75 years ago - 1938
Jim and Jane and the Western Vagabonds from Radio Station WRAK in Williamsport will give an entertainment in the Big Pond M.E. Church on Thursday evening. There will be Western and old time music, a delightful program. Benefit the church.
The Lewis Brothers big 3-ring circus will be in town on Saturday. Entertainment includes trained wild and domestic animals. Cost is 25 cents - 15 cents for children under 12 who present a coupon available in The Daily Review.
The Durell Busy Beaver 4-H club met at the grange hall May 25 with Miss Elizabeth Baxter as instructor. The first year girls have finished their aprons and are now making gowns.
