The highest honor the Pennsylvania Federation of Music Clubs can bestow was given to John Ellis of Sayre at the group's state convention at the Guthrie Inn, Sayre.

Wendy Hale and Kevin Johnson received high honors at the recently held Northeast Bradford High School All-Sports Banquet. Hale was honored with the Scholar Athlete Award and Johnson was voted the Dan Hildebrandt Award recipient.

Brian T. Mackey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph J. Mackey of Towanda, has been awarded the prestigious National Merit Scholarship for 1987.

50 years ago - 1962

With entries listed all the way from Ottawa, Canada, to Virginia, the first official canoe race over a river course in Pennsylvania was staged yesterday on the Susquehanna from Wysox to Wyalusing. National attention was focused on the event because the American Olympic coach and other big names in canoeing were taking part.

Canton High School honor students for the class of 1962 are: valedictorian Thomas J. Innes, whose average is 97.122; salutatorian Jean Brenchley with an average of 94, and Lamont Butters, whose average is 93.577 for third honors.

Wyalusing Valley High School is losing two of its athletic coaches, Robert French, head baseball coach, and William Conroy, track coach. French is going to Oakland, Ore., and Conroy is going to Johnson City.

75 years ago - 1937

Bobby Helps, grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene D. Means of Towanda, won high honors again this year in the piano tournament of the National Guild of Piano Teachers held in New York.

Celebrating his 81st birthday today is Wilson F. Voorhis of Towanda, one of the proprietors of the Voorhis Wholesale Co., former register and recorder of Bradford County, a loyal member of the Towanda Rod and Gun club, "pitch" player deluxe, and a gracious, charming gentleman.

Dates of Pennsylvania's fairs have been announced: the Troy Fair is Aug. 24-28 and the Bradford County Fair in Towanda is Aug. 31-Sept. 3.

Five years ago: President George W. Bush left on an eight-day European trip that included a Group of Eight summit in Germany. Military judges dismissed charges against a Guantanamo detainee accused of chauffeuring Osama bin Laden and another who allegedly killed a U.S. soldier in Afghanistan. Insurgents linked to al-Qaida issued a video in which they claimed to have killed all three U.S. soldiers captured in an ambush on May 12. (The bodies of the soldiers were later recovered.) A federal indictment accused Rep. William Jefferson, D-La., of receiving more than $500,000 in bribes (Jefferson was later convicted of bribery and racketeering).

One year ago: China's Li Na captured her first Grand Slam singles title, becoming the first tennis player from China, man or woman, to achieve such a feat; Na beat Francesca Schiavone 6-4, 7-6 (0) in the French Open final. Former Secretary of State Lawrence Eagleburger, 80, died in Charlottesville, Va.
