The Towanda Area School Board earned a loud round of applause and a partial standing ovation from the more than 50 people in attendance when it voted last night to hire a third school nurse for the 1987-88 school year.
Athens Borough Council once again postponed action on the renewal of the franchise agreement for Valley Cablevision. The council postponed its decision based on the fact that no one showed up for the public hearing last night, not even representatives of the local cable company, who were at another meeting.
At Canton High School, class valedictorian is Yonna Sharlet Taylor, salutatorian is Annissa Linette Metzger, and third honor student is Melissa Louise Roupp.
50 years ago - 1962
Towanda Valley High School graduated a class of 126 last night at its 79th commencement held in the school's gymnasium where the speaker was Dr. J. Clifton Lynch of Athens.
"Direct Blake," owned by Dr. Walter Lunch of Towanda, and regarded as a real classy pacer, is scheduled to participate in the harness races at Troy's Alparon Park tomorrow.
Celebrating his birthday today is Robert W. Schacht, Towanda drug store proprietor.
75 years ago - 1937
At the Towanda Public School, Eleanor Ellis of the third grade has not missed a spelling word this year. Douglas Ginter has not missed one since mid-years.
Towanda High School's graduation class of 1937 held its Class Day exercises in the high school auditorium yesterday with even standing room being at a premium. The commencement exercises are tonight.
Gerald Richard Frantz of Stevensville is celebrating his 12th birthday today. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. G.L. Frantz, a student in the seventh grade of the Camptown school, and a member of the school orchestra.
