50 years ago - 1962
Three local men will hold important positions in the Elmira Chapter of the National Association of Accountants for the year 1962-63. Francis Rockefeller was named program director, Paul DeWitt was appointed associate director of programs, and Francis McNeal was named associate director of publicity.
Celebrating her birthday today is Mrs. Harriet O. Blowers of Towanda, who retired last spring as office deputy of the Bradford County Sheriff.
Louise Wolzak of Eerbeek, Holland, Wyalusing Valley's American Field Service student for 1962-32 school year, will arrive in New York Aug. 7 according to word received by the American family with whom she will live, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Norconk of Wilmot.

Celebrated musicologist Alan Lomax died in Safety Harbor, Fla., at age 87.
Five years ago: A federal judge dismissed a lawsuit brought by former CIA operative Valerie Plame, who was demanding money from Bush administration officials she blamed for leaking her agency identity. Taliban gunmen abducted 23 South Koreans who worked at an aid organization in Kandahar, Afghanistan. (Two hostages were fatally shot; the rest were later freed.)
One year ago: Summoned by British lawmakers to answer for a phone hacking and bribery scandal at one of his tabloids, News of the World, media mogul Rupert Murdoch said he was humbled and ashamed, but accepted no responsibility for wrongdoing.
