The Chemung River Bridge in Athens will open today. State Rep. J. Scot Chadwick reported yesterday that he was notified by PennDOT that the barricades will be removed and traffic will be allowed to cross the new bridge around noon.
Many helped in the food distribution held yesterday in Sullivan County. Chief Clerk Melanie Eddinger estimated 386 families received honey, butter, rice, cheese and dry milk at the distribution.
State Sen. Roger Madigan is encouraging citizens to support the Bradford County Veterans Memorial Fund for the care and maintenance of the monument in Towanda.
50 years ago - 1962
The Waverly Moose entry in the New York State Moose Small Fry Baseball Tournament won its opening game recently at Cortland, defeating Binghamton 5-3.
Towanda's beautifully remodeled First National Bank and its new addition were formally thrown open to the public over the weekend, and hundreds of people from all over attended.
Robert S. Lent of LeRaysville has been assigned to the staff of the county superintendent of schools as school psychologist.
75 years ago - 1937
The detour bulletin of the State Highway Department for the week Aug. 27-Sept. 3 shows that the road between Towanda and Monroeton will be oiled that week.
Celebrating his birthday today is David L. Schultz of East Towanda. He is considered one of the best little caddies at the Towanda Country Club, and a very keen golfer himself, holding the honor of being the only first-year caddy ever to win the right to play an opposing team. He is 15.
Towanda's baseball game at the Troy Fair was rained out yesterday and the boys will not be seen in action again until two days when they once more meet the Wyalusing aggregation.
