25 years ago - Aug. 3, 1988

Patrick Finochio was hired as new principal of Sayre High School at a special meeting of the Board of Education Monday night, replacing Robert Franklin, who resigned as principal on June 24.

Garfield the Cat and members of the Troy Fire Department Station No. 2 in West Burlington presented a fire safety program to children at the Bradford County Library yesterday. Paula Wertz, assistant librarian, said the program was held in conjunction with the library's summer reading program.

There was an outage between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. caused by computer problems in the central office, according to Donna Sedor, a spokeswoman for Commonwealth Telephone Company. Ms. Sedor noted that 5,800 customers in the Towanda area were without service during that time.

50 years ago - Aug. 3, 1963

Seth Edsell, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Edsell of Potterville, has been selected to play in the National FFA Band, which will play at the National FFA Convention in Kansas City, Mo.

Richard R. Davis, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon P. David of Monroeton, was sworn in as the Midshipman in the class of 1967 at the Naval Academy.

James D. Crawford, son of Mrs. Josephine Crawford of Towanda, has been honorably discharged from the U.S. Army and has returned to his home here.

75 years ago - Aug. 3, 1938

Charles Carroll, distinguished Towandian, will be the speaker at the annual reunion of the Susquehanna Collegiate Institute to be held on Aug. 13 it was announced.

On Saturday last, the Burlington team of the Western Bradford Baseball Association trimmed the Sayre Colonels by the score of 8-1. Bonney pitched for Sayre and was nicked for 12 hits. Ray Booth getting three of them.

Dr. F. Hiriman Jones of the graduate school of medicine of the University of Pennsylvania has taken up his duties as fellow in surgery in the Robert Packer Hospital.
