On August 4, 1944, 15-year-old diarist Anne Frank was arrested with her sister, parents and four others by the Gestapo after hiding for two years inside a building in Amsterdam. (Anne died the following year at Bergen-Belsen.)

Howard Bird and Leona Bolster were entertained by a concert given by Guy Munn, a Bradford County "Ole Time Fiddler" at the Hospitality House, a senior citizen center on Desmond Street in Sayre.

Carol Thoman and John Krieg were hired as part-time dispatchers by the Bradford County Commissioners recently at their weekly meeting, on the recommendation of Emergency Management Agency coordinator John Mosser.

Towanda firemen were called to the Hub Store on Main Street Tuesday night. However, no fire was reported.

75 years ago - 1938

The Garden Club of Towanda celebrated its first anniversary with a luncheon at Lake Wesauking Lodge. The meeting was in honor of Mrs. Joel Swift of Nyack, N.Y., who organized the club one year ago. Mr. Swift formerly lived in Towanda.

President Henry E. Dunn of the Towanda Travel Club has placed application blanks at the Apgar and Danneman service stations where they may be obtained by all who wish to become members. The whole aim of the club is to cooperate with other clubs to promote travel within Pennsylvania.

Six hundred persons, including Lehigh Valley Railroad employees and their families, will leave Sayre tomorrow morning aboard a special train for Buffalo, enroute to Crystal Beach, Canada.

The occasion is the annual outing of the athletic, social and welfare associations and the ladies auxiliaries of the Buffalo division.

The United States set a world record to win the women's medley relay. Serena Williams beat Maria Sharapova 6-0, 6-1 to join Steffi Graf as the only women to complete the Golden Slam - winning the Olympics and the four majors. Three British athletes won gold medals in Olympic Stadium: Jessica Ennis in heptathlon; Greg Rutherford in men's long jump; and Mo Farah in the men's 10,000 meters.
