On Feb. 1, 1960, four black college students began a sit-in protest at a whites-only Woolworth's lunch counter in Greensboro, N.C., which refused to serve them; similar protests sprang up across the South.

25 years ago - 1985

The Wysox Chamber of Commerce has constructed an ice skating area on the lower section of the ballfield on the Wysox Volunteer Fire Company grounds.

Drevco Products Inc., Canton, has closed its doors after five years of operations.

The Ingersoll-Rand 1984 Employee of the Year is Duane Henrich of the Mill-Wright Department.

50 years ago - 1960

At Towanda Valley High School, Mrs. Helen Campbell, gym instructor, chose a group of girls interested in tumbling to form a Towanda High Gym Club.

Towanda's new laundry opens this week at 34 Pratt Ave. It is a new modern concept with self-service, coin-operated machines without attendants, open 24 hours a day.

Dr. Arthur B. King was again elected president of the Tioga Point Museum.

75 years ago - 1935

Today, Charles Dannemann of Wysox takes over the operation of the service station at the corner of State and Main streets and formerly occupied by Edward Kirwan. Kirwan takes over the management of the station in the former city garage.

More than 500 people from all parts of Sullivan County attended the President's Birthday Ball at St. Basil's auditorium in Dushore.

In Powell, the farmers in the area are busy harvesting ice.

One year ago: The Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Arizona Cardinals 27-23 to win Super Bowl XLIII (43). Rafael Nadal held off Roger Federer in another momentum-swinging five-set final to win the Australian Open, 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-2. Olympic great Michael Phelps acknowledged "regrettable" behavior and "bad judgment" after a photo in a British newspaper showed him inhaling from a marijuana pipe. Dewey Martin, 68, the drummer and singer who'd helped found the country rock band Buffalo Springfield, was found dead in Van Nuys, Calif.
