On July 10, 1913, the highest recorded shade temperature was measured in Death Valley, Calif., at 134 degrees Fahrenheit (56.7 degrees Celsius). (Previously, the highest recorded shade temperature in the world, 136.4 degrees Fahrenheit, 58 Celsius, was said to have occurred in 1922 in present-day Libya, but the accuracy of that reading was disputed in 2012 by the World Meteorological Organization.)

Shelia Wilcox of East Troy will receive her master's degree from Mansfield University in May, 22 years after earning her bachelor's degree in education from the same school.
Workers with Towanda Borough did a good job getting the Memorial Park playground back up to speed. The playground had fallen into disrepair, and the workers responded to concerns voiced by local residents.
Henry McKean of Troy and Robert Weldy of Burlington will be honored this month by the Department of Pennsylvania Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States as members of the 1987-88 team of all-state post commanders and quartermasters.
50 years ago - 1963
A farewell party for Rev. and Mrs. Charles Lunsford and children will be held at the Evergreen Church hall tonight at 8 o'clock. Rev. Lunsford, who has been poastoring the Evergreen and the Moxie Christian Churches for the past three years, has accepted a new ministry at Akron, N.Y., near Niagara Falls.
Plans are being completed for the annual Roman Holiday celebration which will be held in Rome on Aug. 2 and 3. A parade is being planned for Saturday morning at 10:30. Any floats, bicycles, horses or entries of any type will be most welcome. Prizes will be given for separate categories.
Ruth Louise Allen, 12-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald W. Allen of Towanda RD 5, expects to return home shortly from Shriners' Hospital on Roosevelt Boulevard, Philadelphia, where she has been a patient since Nov. 5.
