An organizational meeting of the Valley Task Force was held recently at the Waverly High School cafeteria to discuss substance abuse, particularly in schools, according to Waverly Superintendent Schools Walter Cain.
County commissioners Williams McNett and Richard Eaton told the environmental group RESCUE and those who came to the Windham town hall Wednesday evening to learn about proposed landfill sites in northeast Pennsylvania, that ther were no easy answers to the solution of the growing garbage problem. The meeting was sponsored by Windham Township supervisors, in response to requests by concerned residents who feared that Northeast Bradford might become the next target for large, for-profit landfill sites, such as are currently being proposed for Susquehanna and neighboring counties.
Bradford County's initial driveway permit application for its new jail being constructed along Route 6 in West Burlington Township was rejected by PennDOT, a spokeman for the state transportation department confirmed yesterday. The reason the application wasn't approved, this spokesman said, was due to a "slight distance problem."
50 years ago - 1963
Miss Susan Lee, daughter of Rep. and Mrs. Kenneth M. Lee of Eagles Mere was selected the state Laurel Queen for 1963 Saturday at the climax of the annual Laurel Festival at Wellsboro.
Miss Mary Catherine Smyth, daughter of Attorney and Mrs. Calendar Wayne Smyth of Troy, became the bride of Richard A. Easton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dick Eaton, on Saturday, June 22.
Dr. Genevra Stone Fleagle of East Smithfield, wife of Dr. S.B. Fleagle, was elected president of the Bradford-Sullivan Counties Health Council at its annual meeting Saturday.
75 years ago - 1938
From today's front page: Headline: Shearer and Gable in 'Gone With the Wind' "Norma Shearer and Clark Gable will play the leading roles in 'Gone With the Wind,' it was learned at Selznick International studio today. Both are under contract to MGM studios. The latter will release the picture. Production is scheduled for next December."
Clara Hall of Gillett, 3½ year old "China Doll," returned to St. Joseph's hospital, Elmira, Tuesday afternoon, with her 20th fracture, a broken left leg. Suffering from a rare bone malady, the youngster has spent a large part of her life in the hospital with fractures. Her left leg was broken Tuesday while her mother, Mrs. George Hall, was washing her feet. When Mrs. Hall turned away for an instant, Clara slipped in the tub and her leg was twisted under her. The girl is a favorite of the hospital nurses. Her bones knit almost as easily as they break, and the result that her hospital visits are brief but frequent.
William Wooster, who was visiting his aunt at Athens, accidently fell on a milk bottle and cut a severe gas in his knee, requiring four stitches to close it. He is now confined to his home here.
