On Nov. 14, 1862, during the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln gave the go-ahead for Maj. Gen. Ambrose Burnside's plan to capture the Confederate capital of Richmond; the resulting Battle of Fredericksburg proved a disaster for the Union.

Members of the Dushore Borough Council and others gathered yesterday for a ribbon cutting and open house at the borough's new municipal building, located on Julia Street. Dr. Jerry Plastow, borough council president, said this is the first Dushore's had a building of their own since it's incorporation in 1859.

Police and fire service concerns were addressed at a recent meeting of New Albany Borough Council. Discussion was held with the mayor concerning hours to be worked by borough policman Gary Cummings.

A large crowed attended yesterday's Christmas bazaar and spaghetti supper sponsored by the SS. Peter and Paul Alter Rosary. The event was held at JFK Hall in Towanda.

50 years ago -- 1963

Jimmy Avants of Sylvania is presently on the Bob Kinney Show, WNBF, Thursday evening at 8 o'clock.

The 1963 Tohimeki, yearbook of Towanda Area High School, has earned the B score from national School yearbook Association, national service which also publishes Photolith, the nation's leading publication for school yearbook staffs.

Preliminary plans for the formal dedication of the new St. Agnes school on Third Street here were announced Wednesday evening by Rt. Rev. Monsignor Joseph A. Griffin, pastor of the SS. Peter and Paul Parish. The laying of the cornerstone and the dedication dinner are scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 8. An impressive array of speaker shave already agreed to come for dinner. They include Phil Rizzuto, former shortshop for the New York Yankees; Senator Robert Casey of Scranton; Congressman Joseph McDade of Scranton.

75 years ago - 1938

Towanda High School art student Yvonne Kershner, Louise Delty, Irene Elliott, Virginia Beirne, Fred Bailey and Robert Towner have constructed posters that are on exhibit at Towanda Public Library. The theme of the posters is children's books.

Mother Francesca Cabrini today became the first American citizen numbered by the Catholic church among its blessed in heaven. Mother Cabrini devoted her life to helping Italian immigrants.
