'Greening of the Valley'
BARTON, N.Y. — The Carantouan Greenway held a walking tour of its tree trails Sunday at Wildwood Nature Reserve to mark the "Greening of the Valley."
Marty Borko, vice-president of Carantouan Greenway, explained that most trees in the area lose their leaves over the winter. During the next few weeks, Borko said, those trees will grow new leaves with the coming of Spring.
"Today’s field trip basically is to help people identify the trees without their leaves," Borko explained, saying that trees without their leaves are hard to identify.
"What the Carantouan Greenway did is we marked the trees with a number system. We created a guide on the trees so that anyone could go to the Valley libraries and pick one of these up."
Borko explained the trees along the trail are marked with yellow numbers. The marked trees are listed in the guide, to help people identify them.
Activities included Borko walking on the trail along with Carantouan members John and Marilyn Palmer of Athens. Borko pointed out various marked trees along the trail — including Red Oak, Black Walnut, Black Willow, and Staghorn Sumac. Borko provided information about the trees, their uses, and their historical values.
