Group raising money to fight breast cancer
An Athens bar will hold a bake sale fundraiser Sunday to work toward its goal of raising $10,000 to fight breast cancer.
The "Tanner's for Tatas" team will sell baked goods, T-shirts and hold raffles from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Tanner's Bar on Route 199 in Athens Township.
Team captain Timmi Rightmire said the entire community is invited to stop by during the fundraiser, which will be held while the Daytona 500 NASCAR race airs on television.
Wicked Women Candles has also made special candles for the team and will donate a percentage of its proceeds from sales Sunday, Rightmire said.
This is the third year Tanner's for Tatas has raised money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation of the Twin Tiers. The group will again participate in May's Race for the Cure 5K Run/Walk in Elmira, N.Y.
In 2012, its first year of participation, the team raised $4,800 for the organization, which funds research and provides grants for breast cancer treatment, early detection and education in nine counties, including Bradford. Last year, the group raised $7,800, and this year, their goal is $10,000, Rightmire said.
Group members are also hoping to organize other events to raise additional funds, including a possible stiletto race in the spring. During the race, men would put on heels and run a quarter-mile down the street in support of the cause.
The male regulars at Tanner's have been surprisingly receptive to the idea, especially since most of them are close to someone who has had breast cancer, Rightmire said. "A lot of them are willing to do it," she said.
The bar's co-owners, Ryan Wood and John Thurston, and its patrons have been supportive of the effort and also donate to other community events throughout the year, including the annual Christmas is for Kids toy drive, Rightmire said.
