Hearing on milk plant continued
CANTON TWP. - The owner of the old milk plant in Grover, Canton Township, has been given some extra time to get the property cleaned up.
Previously, Canton Township filed a complaint against one of the milk plant owners, Archie Vroman, no age given, who has a Canton Post Office box address.
The private criminal complaint accuses Vroman of a violation of the Canton Township Junkyard and Refuse Ordinance, specifically "maintaining a junk yard without a license to do so, at the old Grover milk plant."
A summary trial on a complaint filed by the township supervisors was scheduled for 10 a.m. on March 1 at Magisterial District Judge Jonathan Wilcox's office in Troy. A spokesman at Wilcox's office said Vroman pleaded not guilty, so the trial is required.
However, at this week's township meeting, it was noted that Wilcox is continuing the hearing to 10 a.m. on May 9 to allow the owner a reasonable period of time of at least 60 days to clean up the property.
According to the township, Vroman will contact the township secretary when the clean-up is completed so the township can inspect.
When asked for comment about the building previously, supervisor Jasper Smith said, "it needs to be torn down and it is a mess."
He said that he would like the owner to "clean it up, and tear it down and get rid of it."
"It's an eyesore and it's dangerous," he said.
