John DeSisti, the Waverly man accused of the murder of his cousin and her husband in Nov. 2006, has died, officials confirmed Monday.
DeSisti died at 12:48 a.m. Monday at the state correctional facility at Laurel Highlands, where he was incarcerated, according to Somerset County coroner Wallace Miller. DeSisti was 76. “We suspect he passed of natural causes,” Miller said.
Senior judge David Grine found DeSisti incompetent to stand trial on two counts of murder and one count of burglary last June due to his declining condition, including what his attorneys stated was symptoms of advanced dementia of the Alzheimer’s type. He had been scheduled to appear at another competency evaluation in April.
State police arrested DeSisti in Dec. 2010 in connection to the Keeffes’ shooting deaths at their residence. DeSisti and Carol Keeffe were cousins.
The state district attorney’s office, which is prosecuting the case, had no comment Monday.
