Canton Township supervisors recently approved a junkyard application.

According to township secretary Elnor Blaney, Thomas May, d.b.a. Canton Body Shop, submitted an application for a junkyard site at 357 Newell Rd., Canton.

Blaney said the township at its last meeting approved the application with four special conditions attached to this first year's permit.

First, fencing, as detailed in the application, will have to be completed within one year of the permit/license issue.

Also, plantings, "evergreen in nature," shall be installed along the perimeter of fencing, as detailed in the application, within one year of the permit/license issue. She said Canton Township supervisors will inspect the area and grant special consideration with possibly only plantings to be installed along three sides, not the whole perimeter.

In addition, a designated representative will inspect the junkyard site every three months to ensure compliance.

Another condition is that the area surrounding Canton Body Shop, 12537 Rt. 14, Canton, will be cleared of any junk items and properly maintained.

It was noted at the meeting that tar and chipping of township roads has been completed. Supervisors gave the road foreman permission to have Watson Diesel install an aluminum tool box and ladder to the 2012 Dodge pickup, Blaney said.

The road foreman and Blaney are continuing to work with Bassett Engineering to update all road maintenance agreements with existing pipeline and gas companies currently working with or traveling roadways in Canton Township, Blaney said.

Blaney said she was approved to proceed with renewing health insurance coverage. Existing health plan through Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania will no longer be offered after 2014. This gives Canton Township ample time to compare plans to best determine which is suitable and comparable to coverage offered, she noted.

Supervisor Mark McMurray attended the fire company meeting on Oct. 8 for discussion of fire contracts, according to Blaney.
