At the Towanda Area School Board's re-organizational meeting this month, newly elected school board member Keith Lamphere took the oath of office.
Board secretary Cheryl Vaughn administered the oath of office to Lamphere as well as to incumbents Robert Fetterman, Peggi Munkittrick and Susan Portnoff, who were elected to four-year terms on the board in the November election.
The board elected Munkittrick as its president for the next year in a 7-2 vote. No one else was nominated for the president position. Those voting against electing Munkittrick were Bob Hettich and Lamphere.
In an interview on Wednesday, Lamphere said: "I personally don't care for her (Munkittrick)."
Munkittrick is among the members on the board who need to tell the administration to "stop spending and start cutting, because the taxpayers can't afford it."
Instead, Munkittrick and others on the board raise taxes rather than control spending, Lamphere said.
Pete Alesky was elected vice-president of the school board for the next year, outpolling Evelyn Sherburne 5-4.
Those voting for Alesky were Guy Maryott, Robert Hettich, Fetterman, Lamphere, and Alesky. Those voting for Sherburne were Munkittrick, Portnoff, David Rice, and Sherburne.
The board also set the dates that it will meet during 2010.
The Towanda Area School Board will meet the second and third Monday of each month in the Towanda Area Elementary School at 7 p.m. However, the second meeting in February will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 16.
Also, the sole meeting in December will be on the first Monday of the month.
There are no meetings scheduled for July.
The board also voted to create a blended schools coordinator position, which will be funded entirely with federal economic stimulus money.
Attempts by The Review to reach Hettich for comment Wednesday night were unsuccessful.
