The Athens Township supervisors this week presented a picture and plaque to Athens Township Police Chief Larry Hurley in appreciation his 25 years of service on the township police department.

"We think he (Hurley) has been an excellent police chief," Supervisor Jack Walter said on Friday.

In addition to serving as police chief, Hurley is head of the Bradford County Drug Task Force.

Both the Drug Task Force and the Athens Township Police Department are very active in cracking down on drug activity, Walter said.

Hurley "has dedicated his life to trying to keep Bradford County and the Valley free of drugs and trying to protect young people from getting their lives dependant on drugs," Walter said. "He's really worked hard on that."

"We have the upmost respect for Larry," said Ron Reagan, chairman of the Athens Township supervisors.

"We have a good police force" and Hurley had a hand in that as he selects the officers that are hired, subject to a final vote by the township supervisors, Reagan said.

Hurley began his 25 years' of service on the township police department as a patrolman, and he worked his way up to chief, Walter said. Hurley has served as chief for many years.

The picture is a reproduction of a painting of a fly fishing scene. The frame of the picture has a plaque mounted on it which expresses appreciation to Hurley, Reagan said.

Hurley wants to learn how to fly fish, Reagan said, explaining the choice of the painting.

"Some day, when he retires, that's what he wants to do," Reagan said.

"I hope he never retires, but I know that day will arrive" at some point, Reagan said.

As chief, Hurley oversees eight full-time police officers.

The picture and plaque were presented to Hurley on Wednesday at the township supervisors' meeting.

Attempts to reach Hurley for comment on Friday night were unsuccessful.
