Social Security representatives will be on duty at the Disaster Recovery Center in Towanda from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday - Friday, starting Sept. 19. The Disaster Recovery Center is located in the Towanda Fire Station at 101 Elm Street.

Social Security employees on duty at the Disaster Recovery Center will be providing limited face-to-face service such as filing an application for a replacement social security card and scheduling telephone appointments. This service will continue until the Social Security Administration finds temporary space for an office in the Towanda area.

"We are looking for temporary space where we can open a full-service office for the residents of Bradford and Sullivan Counties while our permanent office space at 1 Elizabeth Street is renovated," said Aurelia Serrano-Wilson, Social Security District Manager in Towanda. "The office was heavily damaged by the flood waters and we expect it will be months before it is ready to reopen."

Most Social Security services do not require a visit to an office, according to Ms. Serrano-Wilson. She urged the public to use Social Security's website or call the toll-free number as most business can be taken care of using those options. "For example, anyone wishing to apply for benefits, sign up for direct deposit, replace a Medicare card, obtain a proof of income letter or inform us of a change of address or telephone number may do so at www.socialsecurity.gov or by dialing Social Security's toll-free number, 1-800-772-1213. People who are deaf or hard of hearing may call our TTY number, 1-800-325-0778."

The offices nearest to Towanda providing full service are Elmira, New York, at 100 West Church Street, Suite 201 and Scranton, Pennsylvania at 409 Lackawanna Avenue, First Floor. Office hours at both offices are 9:00 AM - 3:30 PM, Monday - Friday, except federal holidays.
