Man accused of assaulting 22-month-old to be tried in Court of Common Pleas
TROY - All charges against a 28-year-old Millerton man who is accused of causing serious bodily injury to a 22-month-old girl Dec. 19 at his residence on Whispering Pine Drive in Wells Township were recently bound over to the Bradford County Court of Common Pleas, according to Magisterial District Judge Jonathan Wilcox of Troy.
Joseph Michael White was charged with aggravated assault, endangering welfare of children, simple assault, and recklessly endangering another person, according to court papers.
In an affidavit, Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Nathan Lewis stated that he was contacted by a Bradford County Children and Youth Services worker.
Lewis said that the worker stated that she received a report of a 22-month-old girl arriving at approximately 10:09 p.m. Dec. 19 at Arnot Ogden Medical Center in Elmira, N.Y. with various injuries, including, but not limited to, a broken femur and bruising.
The worker stated that the child was in the care of her mother's finance, White, at the time that the injury occurred. The girl was transferred to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.Y. She suffered a fractured right femur, just below the buttocks. The papers also note that she had a fractured wrist.
White told an investigator that the girl was on the bed, and had fallen off the bed onto a plastic toy, injuring herself. However, the investigator said that White eventually recanted his initial explanation and said that he had struck the girl with his hand, just below the buttocks, in an attempt to spank her, at which point she fell into a metal bed frame and was injured.
The investigator stated that White said that he had hit the girl harder than he ever has previously, and the strike even hurt his hand. White said that he placed the girl on the bed, and when he told her to get up, she was unable to do so.
White was placed in Bradford County Correctional Facility in lieu of $75,000 bail.
