Man arrested for DUI following 3-vehicle crash in Towanda
TOWANDA - A 23-year-old Towanda man was arrested on suspicion of DUI after he caused a three-vehicle accident on Monday at the west end of the Veterans Memorial Bridge in Towanda, police said.
All three vehicles that were involved were heading west on U.S. Route 6, police said.
At the time of the accident, two of the vehicles - operated by Janet Richardson of Rome and Joseph Wheeler of Towanda - were stopped at a red light, and both Richardson and Wheeler were planning to make a left-hand turn onto South Main Street, police said.
The third vehicle, which was operated by 23-year-old Jesse Paul Johnson of Towanda, rear-ended Richardson's vehicle, which was in turn pushed into the rear of Wheeler's vehicle, police said.
A passenger in Richardson's vehicle, 66-year-old Carol Eddy of Rome, complained of some shoulder pain, Towanda Police Officer Ryan Edsell said.
She was examined by EMTs on scene following the accident, which occurred at 10:01 a.m.
Johnson's vehicle had "pretty serious front-end damage" and was towed from the scene, Edsell said.
Richardson's vehicle had minor front- and rear-end damage, he said.
Wheeler's vehicle had very minor rear-end damage, he said.
Johnson, who lives on South Main Street, was arrested for suspicion of DUI, he said.
Westbound traffic on the bridge was backed up for a short time, he said.
