Man bags 19 point buck on NY opening day

Font size: [A] [A] [A]

TIOGA COUNTY, N.Y.- Although regular deer season opened Monday in Pennsylvania, Tioga County, N.Y., resident Paul Kunik was in for a big surprise when he went out on Nov. 21 - the first day of regular deer season in the Southern New York region - in the woods behind his home with his 270 Rifle and bagged a 19-point buck.

It was approximately 11:30 a.m. on opening day when Kunik spotted a large buck in the woods nearby his home on Glen Road in Berkshire, N.Y. With what Kunik referred to as a clean shot, the oversized buck went down shortly after it was hit.

But Kunik was soon in for a big surprise when he approached the deer and began counting the horns on the rack. Thinking it was a 12-point buck, Kunik kept counting ... all the way to 19.

"I didn't see how big he really was until he was down," Kunik said. "I was overwhelmed when I counted, over and over, and it was a 19-pointer," he added. "I was in disbelief."

Kunik noted that the deer was field dressed at 160 pounds, and that he has already sent the deer to a local taxidermist to have it mounted. The meat, Kunik added, is in his freezer.

I may be mistaken but i believe the term "bag" comes from the fact that in more remote areas...say, Idaho or Montana...hunters have to dress and section thier game and carry them out in multiple trips in "game bags" Cabela's sells them if your intetrested....

I tried to tackle a tiny piebald doe once, as a group of deer were filing past a large tree behind which I was hiding. I got the snot kicked out of me. I'm glad I didn't try to bag it.
