Matt Allen of Troy appointed Bradford County auditor
TOWANDA - Matt Allen of Troy, who holds a certification as a public school math teacher, has been appointed to the position of Bradford County auditor.
Allen, a 34-year-old Republican, will be one of Bradford County's three county auditors.
"Matt is very qualified for this position," Bradford County Commissioner Doug McLinko said at the Bradford County commissioners' meeting on Thursday.
Allen is filling the auditor position that his mother, Audrey Allen, held. Audrey Allen was serving her fifth term as Bradford County auditor when she died April 3.
Matt Allen will serve out the remainder of his mother's term as auditor, which ends at the end of 2015. If he wishes to continue to serve as a county auditor after that, he will need to stand for election in 2015.
"We know he will do a terrific job, like his mom did," McLinko said.
Bradford County President Judge Jeffrey A. Smith appointed Matt Allen to the auditor position.
Smith "did his due diligence" in finding a replacement for Audrey Allen, McLinko said.
"I don't think there were very many applicants" for the position, McLinko said.
Matt Allen's first day as auditor was Tuesday.
"I'm just trying to get my feet wet, trying to learn," Matt Allen said after he was introduced at the commissioners' meeting. "I have got a good teacher here," he said, pointing to fellow auditor Susan Storch.
The three Bradford County auditors work part time, earning $21,235 per year. They work 155 6-hour days per year, earning $137 per day.
Matt Allen said he had administered the payroll for the student workers in two dorms at Bloomsburg University in Bloomsburg, when he was a graduate student there.
He earned a B.S. in secondary education, with a specialty in social science, from Lock Haven University,
He also earned 30 credits toward a master's degree in curriculum and instruction from Bloomsburg University.
He holds certifications to teach social studies in grades 7 to 12, and to teach science and math in grades 7 to 9.
Matt Allen said he has known the other two Bradford County auditors, Jeff Warner and Storch, a long time and knows he can work with them.
The auditors audit the county's expenditures and revenues, including at the Bradford County Manor and at the Bradford County Correctional Facility.
