TERRY TOWNSHIP - Eric Anthony Latini, 17, of Wyalusing was killed in a motorcycle accident Tuesday in Terry Township, one week before he was scheduled to graduate from Wyalusing High School, authorities said.

Latini's death is "a tragic loss," said Chester Mummau, superintendent of the Wyalusing Area School District. While there is never a good time for a fatal accident to occur, it is particularly terrible for it to happen shortly before one's high school graduation, he said.

According to Wyalusing High School Principal Gary Otis, Latini was "very popular" and "very well liked," Mummau said.

Latini was driving a motorcycle north on U.S. Route 187 at 2:39 p.m. when, for an unknown reason, he lost control on a right curve, state police said.

The motorcycle left the left side of the roadway and struck two trees, the state police said.

Latini died from multiple traumatic injuries, Bradford County Coroner Thomas Carman said.

Latini was "killed on impact," and was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel, Carman said.

State police are still reconstructing the accident scene as they try to determine why the accident occurred, he said Tuesday evening.

Latini was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, Carman said.

The accident occurred between Viall Hill Road and Race Hill Road, police said.

The motorcycle, a 1992 Suzuki, sustained major damage, the coroner said.

Routine toxicology studies are being performed on Latini, as is the case whenever a driver dies in a motor vehicle accident, the coroner said.

In response to Latini's death, school staff were arranging Tuesday evening for counseling to be available at Wyalusing High for students and staff, beginning today and continuing until the last day of school, which is Tuesday, Mummau said. Counselors are being brought in from Northern Tier Counseling and other schools, he said.

The senior class was scheduled to have graduation practice today. The seniors are then scheduled leave Thursday on their senior trip to Virginia, from which they will return back on Monday. Wyalusing High's graduation ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday.
