State Rep. Tina Pickett (R-Wysox Township) will co-chair a public hearing of the House Republican Policy Committee on Thursday in Ulster on issues surrounding the Marcellus Shale natural gas development and drilling, according to a press release from Pickett's office.

The specific focus of the hearing will include water quality, roads, permitting and the overall economic impact of the gas drilling, the release said.

Among those scheduled to testify at the hearing are John Hanger, secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, and Kathryn Klaber, president of the Marcellus Shale Coalition, Pickett said.

Tony Ventello, executive director of the Central Bradford Progress Authority, will testify on the impact of gas drilling on the economy.

Representatives from Chesapeake Energy and other stakeholders will also testify.

"The public is welcome to be at the hearing to observe," Pickett said.

The public is also welcome to submit written testimony at the hearing, but would not be placed on the agenda to speak, she said.

The public hearing will take place at 3 p.m. on Thursday, May 20, at the Ulster-Sheshequin Fire Association on Mill Street in Ulster.

The four "focus" areas for this public hearing are quite broad. Each topic (water quality, roads, permitting, and overall economic impact) is large enough for its own public hearing. Hopefully residents have some data on one or more of these subtopics and will submit their input in writing at this meeting. The republican party has done little to harness the drilling in PA, and this is an opportunity to give them some ideas concerning what they could be improving.

It's not much of a public hearing if the public cannot participate by being on the agenda and speaking, but since the public will be permitted to provide written testimony, I would encourage anyone in Bradford County who has anything to say concerning these drilling issues to write up your testimony (granted, you have to do it TODAY since the hearing is tomorrow) and go to the meeting tomorrow to hear the testimony being given by John Hanger, DEP and others as well as to submit your written comments. Let the truth be submitted, if not heard!
