Painting project closes library until Friday
The Sayre Public Library will be closed today and Thursday while painters wrap up work on the library's interior painting project.
The repainting, which Husick Brothers Painting has worked on throughout the month, was funded through a grant received in 2010 through the Commonwealth Libraries Grant Program. Patrons will be able to see the finished product for themselves when the South Elmer Avenue library reopens at 10 a.m. Friday.
"We expect to have it completed by the end of the week," said library director Susan DePumpo Robinson. Painters were working Tuesday on the ceiling and walls, Robinson said.
"It looks beautiful," she said of the painting work. "They're doing a great job."
The library will remain closed until Friday because painting equipment, ladders, lifts and scaffolding around the building make it hard to get around the library, Robinson said. In fact, the front door was blocked Tuesday by a ladder, and staff entered the building through the back door, she said.
The closure means that the third annual Teen Art Jam, originally scheduled for this week, will be postponed to March 1, Robinson said.
The event, in which those between 13 and 18 years of age are encouraged to showcase their talents, will run from 4 to 6 p.m., according to information from the library. Teens may still register for the event, which is limited to 40 attendees, by calling or visiting the library.
Each participant will be given a time slot to display their artwork, sing, play an instrument, act out a scene from a play or movie, or read poetry, according to library information. Refreshments will also be available.
The Teen Art Jam was planned by the library's teen advisory council, which meets weekly to assist library officials in planning programs of interest to teenagers. Applications to join the council are available at the library.
While the painting project has placed some kinks in the library's programming schedule, Robinson said the staff are excited to reopen and show off the building's refreshed appearance. "We'll be happy to have the public come in," she said.
Employees will be at the library today and Thursday to assist patrons via phone or email, Robinson said. To reach the library, call (570) 888-2256 or email sayrepl@stny.rr.com.
