Proposal in the park
Unbeknownst to the soon to be engaged 24-year-old Shannon Butler of Owego, N.Y., what was a romantic stroll in the park soon turned into a dream come true for this young bride-to-be.
It was approximately 6:25 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 6, when 30-year-old Jared Martin, also of Owego, N.Y. decided to enjoy the nice weather on the bench near the Riverwalk and in Draper Park with his longtime girlfriend, Shannon Butler.
But it was at that unsuspecting moment that pilot Joe Costa, of Corning, N.Y., flew overhead with a banner that stated: "Marry Me Shannon Butler."
Butler's surprise and delight was priceless, as Martin knelt down to present her a ring he purchased from Van Horn Jewelers on Lake Street in Owego, N.Y.
The blushing bride-to-be, who became overwhelmed, admirably accepted.
At that moment, and as the plane continued to circle the area surrounding Draper Park, family and friends approached from the Riverwalk, where they had been waiting to witness the proposal.
Beth and Mark Johnson, owners of the Parkview Hotel and Restaurant, immediately brought out a bottle of champagne for the newly engaged couple and their guests. They then celebrated at the Parkview, where over 100 motorcycles had already arrived, and music by Jeff Howell, former member of Foghat, The Outlaws and Savoy Brown, was entertaining guests outdoors.
According to Martin, they have not yet set a date, but are anticipating an August 2015 wedding, to be announced.
Congratulations to Shannon Butler and Jared Martin on your engagement!
