Relief efforts are underway to assist a family in Athens Township who were burned out of their residence Monday night.

Sharon Lowery reported that goods are being collected at the Lowery Internet Cafe in Athens Borough to help two adult males, one adult female, and a three-year-old girl who lost their home and possessions when a fire destroyed a single-story home at the intersection of Beaver Pond Road and Murray Creek Road. Lowery declined to provide the family's identity, due to confidentiality issues, but confirmed that those involved were a man, woman, their daughter and the girl's uncle. Lowery also said that they've had enough toys donated at the cafe to give to the girl for Christmas.

Concerning additional items, Lowery said the ideal thing would be gift cards that they could give to the family, because they lost everything in the fire. Canned goods are also something they can use.

"You can never have enough canned goods," she said.

She said she's been working with Chris Sutton to move the family into new quarters within the next few days. Lowery also explained that they don't have the capability of handling large household items, so anyone wishing to donate such things should contact her at (570) 888-3991 for information about where to drop them off. Lowery said she's been working with The Bridge and the Towanda Salvation Army to provide relief for the family.

Jill Deskins, Valley Director of the Sullivan Trail Chapter of the American Red Cross, reported that they have been providing the family with temporary quarters until something more permanent can be found. Deskins said that the Red Cross is not taking specific donations for the family, but they are accepting money and items for the chapter's Disaster Relief Fund, which is used to help people in such circumstances.
