Rep. Carney responds to challenger's criticism
In response to congressional candidate David Madeira's criticism of U.S. Rep. Chris Carney in an article in Thursday's Daily Review, Carney issued the following statement:
"I am proud to have fought hard to bring investments to our region that boost employment, provide improvements to our region's hospitals and infrastructure and enable our community's law enforcement officers to have the equipment they need to keep us safe. I stand up for the needs of our region every day in Congress and will never stop fighting for the many worthy projects throughout our community.
"The Recovery Act was enacted at a point when our economy was on the verge of collapse. The measure was a crucial investment that helped us avoid a complete economic meltdown through the largest tax cut in American history, investments to put people back to work and critical help to shore up state budgets.
"The Recovery Act provided tax cuts for more than 26,000 families in Bradford County alone. It has helped pay for more than a dozen road, bridge and sewer repair projects in the county and has provided nearly $10 million to school districts in the county to help them avoid cutbacks and pay for new equipment. All the while, companies such as CraftMaster have benefited from competitive grants through the measure that have helped to boost employment and provide crucial energy upgrades.
"Now we're seeing the signs of a rebound. In the fourth quarter our economy grew at the fastest rate in six years. The country's manufacturing base grew for the sixth straight month in December. While there is still much work to be done, economists widely agree that the Recovery Act kept this country from falling into a second Great Depression.
"I have also fought for the reenactment of pay-as-you-go rules. Pay-as-you-go rules turned huge deficits into record surpluses in the 1990s and should have never have been allowed to expire by the previous administration. It's time we got back on track. That's why I supported reenacting pay-go and opposed a move to raise the debt ceiling. Families make tough decisions about their budgets every day and Congress should have to do the same."
