An Athens Township restaurant will begin collecting coats Tuesday for area children and families in need of warm clothes this winter.

Callear's R&R Bar-B-Que, located on Winslow Street, will collect gently used or new coats during its first ever "Winter Round-Up" coat drive, according to Jeannie Post of Callear's. Donations will be collected through Nov. 17 in a box located in the restaurant's new dining room.

Snowpants, snowsuits, mittens, gloves, scarves and hats will also be accepted, according to information from the restaurant.

The drive targets children in particular, Post said, but winter gear in adult sizes will also be accepted. Following the drive, donations will be given to The Bridge of the Penn-York Valley Churches, who will distribute them to area children and families in need through its "Kids in Crisis" program, Post said.

This is the first year the restaurant is holding the coat drive, Post said. Callear's co-owner Roxy Callear collected coats and other winter garments from her neighbors last year and donated them to the schools, Post said, but this year restaurant officials decided to bring the entire community into it.

"We're just trying to do something good," Post said. "We're hoping to make it an annual thing."
